Air Pollution Meteorology

  • Long-term health effects from air pollution include heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases such as emphysema. Air pollution can also cause long-term damage to people’s nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs. Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. When ozone forms air pollution, it’s also called smog.
  • Some air Major Outdoor Air Pollutants : Ozone (O3),Nitrogen Oxides (NOx),Carbon Monoxide (CO),Sulfur Dioxide (SO2),Particulate Matter pollutants are poisonous. Inhaling them can increase the chance you’ll have health problems.
  • Causes of Air Pollution;- Almost all of the common air pollutants can be produced by industrial processes, Transportation Emissions, Agriculture Side-Effects, Home Heating, Home Cooking, Volcano Eruptions and Forest Fires.
  • Meteorological factors have an important effect on the amount of pollution in the atmosphere. Temperature and solar radiation affect the quantities of pollutant emitted by their influence on the amount of space heating required. Sunshine is required in a photochemical production of oxidants forming smog. The wind velocity, turbulence and stability affect the transport, dilution and dispersion of the pollutants.  The humidity is a frequent and important factor in determining the effect that concentrations of pollutants have on property, vegetation and health. Meteorological processes that influence air quality – Sunlight – Horizontal dispersion Vertical mixing Global – Vertical mixing – Transport – Clouds – precipitation- Air Masses and Fronts.
